Opportunities

The global credit crisis has seen the S&P500 fall approximately 28 percent between October 2007 and September 2008 going from 1,576.09 to 1,133.50. Additionally, the S&P Bank Index has fallen nearly 71 percent between February 2007 and July 2008 going from 414.72 to a low of 123.62. A large portion of pension and investment funds have historically held large positions in banking and financial services stocks. An informed investor would have recognised the faltering banking and financial services stocks which would have given the investor an opportunity to move a large portion of their funds into money market accounts protecting their capital against future losses. In comparison, an aggressive trader may have taken the opportunity to profit massively from the situation by shorting bank and financial services stocks across the same timeframe.

Past Opportunities

During the 5 year period from 2002 to 2007 we experienced globally a low interest rate environment that has enabled global equity markets to flourish. The Dow Jones grew nearly 100 percent between October 2002 and October 2007 going from 7,197.43 to 14,198.10 . In addition the S&P500 has grown over 100 percent between October 2002 and October 2007 from 768.63 to 1,576.09.

During the 10 years leading up to 2000 we saw one of the great bull market runs in the late 1990s leading to the famous dot com bubble bursting. Between March 2000 and October 2002 the NASDAQ fell over 78 percent from an all time high of 5,132.52 to 1,108.49. Early warning signals identified through inter-market analysis identified a profitable opportunity for bear investors/traders and an opportunity for bulls to move to cash.

Since the early 1990s there have been numerous opportunities for traders to profit from a number of financial markets including; equities, commodities, fixed income and foreign exchange. We have seen the US Dollar Index rise from 85 at the start of 1995 to 120 in 2000, gaining 40 percent. The NASDAQ went from 700 to 5,000 in the same time period. No matter what the market conditions are, there is always an opportunity, whether the markets are going up, down or sideways.
